President Rodrigo Roa Duterte delivers his departure speech at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City. He left the country on May 22, 2017 for an official visit to Russia.

The President clarified, in his speech, that in pursuing an independent foreign policy there is a need to strengthen ties with the Russian government, led by President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, in areas such as political-security, economic development, and cultural exchange. He also said he will meet with Russian business leaders in a bid to find more partners who could help sustain the country’s economic growth.

The President added he is eager to meet with the Overseas Filipino Workers based in Russia to thank them personally for their contribution to nation building.

Also in his speech, he urged the public to support Filipino-made products in his speech, including the Ibarra watches and the Marikina shoes.

Prior to his departure, the President met with Republic of Korea Special Envoy to ASEAN and Seoul Mayor Park Won-Soon. Joining the President in the meeting were Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Enrique Manalo. PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO
