PBBM: Journalists crucial in fighting misinformation, fake news

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recognized Friday the bravery of journalists as he joined the celebration for the World Press Freedom Day, highlighting the press’ crucial role in combating misinformation and fake news.

“In Bagong Pilipinas, we celebrate our journalists for their courage in conveying unbiased reports, and we rely on them to continue being the stalwarts of truth and transparency,” President Marcos said in his message.

“As the fourth pillar of our democracy, their words serve as our strongest defense against misinformation and fake news. Now, more than ever, their commitment to their work is crucial,” he pointed.

The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day to raise awareness on the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.

“A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis” is this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme.

The 2024 celebration will be dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the current global environmental crisis. PND
