Baguio City (May 17, 2024) – Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. led the awarding ceremony for distinguished cadets and units of the Cadet Corps, Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP) at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) on Friday.
Secretary Teodoro commended this year’s graduating class, the “Bagong Henerasyong Gagampanan ang Tama: Serbisyo, Integridad, at Nasyonalismo ang Aming Gabay” or “BAGONG SINAG” Class of 2024 awardees for their outstanding performance throughout their education, highlighting their resilience in overcoming challenges and excellence in various areas of expertise.
The Defense Chief emphasized the evolving operating landscape of the AFP, stressing the importance of preparing for multi-threat scenarios and embracing technological advancements. He affirmed the commitment of the Department of National Defense (DND) to continuously forge partnerships with foreign institutions, to broaden educational opportunities for PMA cadets.
“I encourage you to take further educational opportunities in order to immerse yourself in the emergent and developing technologies, which may be necessary for our country to develop on its own, since we cannot rely totally on any other country for our whole defense picture,” told the cadets, as he lauded the battalion and company leaderships for their roles in shaping the character and capabilities of the graduating class.
Reflecting on the importance of discipline and adherence to military regulations, Secretary Teodoro underscored the non-negotiable nature of the honor code, emphasizing the need for integrity and accountability among future leaders. “You can engage in academic freedom as much as you want, but when it comes to military regulations there shall be no compromise,” he added.
The SND stressed the significance of humility among the future military officers, and emphasized the value of listening to experienced NCOs in the field. He cautioned against complacency and reminded the graduating class of the critical role of leadership in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of their units.
“There is wisdom in seniority. Not rank seniority but field seniority and experience in the field. Your corporals and your sergeants, your senior enlisted personnel will be the best sources of mentoring for you as you join them in the collective leadership of your units,” he told the cadets.
“We look forward to welcoming you into the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. We look forward to your continuing education. We congratulate your parents and your support systems, your families, your foster parents, and all those who have made a special effort to see you where you are now,” the Defense Chief concluded.
