PBBM honors outstanding mining firms

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday lauded firms that have shown commitment to responsible mining.

President Marcos led the awarding ceremony for the 2023 Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award (PMIEA) in Malacañang, where he cited the event as a celebration of the mining firms’ commitment and responsibility.

“This ceremony is a celebration of your commitment and your responsibility. It is a tribute to those who see mining as a profound opportunity to uplift communities and ensure environmental sustainability for generations to come,” the President said.

Last year, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) opened the nominations for the 2023 PMIEA.

According to President Marcos, at least 35 companies under Surface Mining Operation, Quarry Operation, and Mineral Processing categories vied for the recognition.

A total of 13 mining and mineral processing companies stood out as recipients of the 2023 PMIEA.

“These Awardees have shown commendable support for our vision for the mining sector,” the President said.

“You continue to invest in environmental technologies and adopt best practices that go even beyond compliance—from pioneering reforestation efforts to utilizing more sustainable extraction techniques,” he added.

President Marcos also highlighted the contributions of the awardees to their host and neighboring communities.

“Your meaningful contributions to the host and neighboring communities through education, healthcare, and livelihood programs are truly inspiring,” the President said.

“These initiatives demonstrate how we can unite the industry with the goals of social and environmental progress,” he added.

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 399, series of 1997, the PMIEA is an annual recognition activity dedicated to mining groups and companies that have achieved exemplary performance in safety and health management, environmental protection and enhancement, and social and community development. | PND
