MERCADO:                                       Usec. Abella, magandang umaga po.

USEC. ABELLA:                              Magandang umaga rin po sa kanila.

MERCADO:                                       Tumawag kami dahil sa gusto naming malaman kung ano bang …the President has had a very important call, at si President Xi Jinping ang nakausap niya kahapon. How significant is this? And what is the significance of this particular call?

USEC. ABELLA:                              Unang-una po, tama po iyong sinabi ninyo na it’s a very important call ano. It covered … actually, may actual caucus siya. Pero unang-una, in-affirm ng Presidente iyong kanilang pagkakaibigan between the Philippines and China. Mahalaga po iyan siguro, unang-una, , it should help the Filipinos to understand and put in perspective China sa ating buhay, in our region. Ibinabalik po kasi ng Presidente yong ating Asianess ‘no, na mahalaga po na ang ating relationships are—patutunayan ulit natin makitungo sa ating mga kapitbahay.

Pangalawa po, and this is very important, ipinahayag din po ng Presidente iyong kaniyang … iyong views natin with concern to the development sa Korean peninsula. Ang ano po niya, ang talagang in-emphasize ng Presidente iyon pong pangangailangan, the need to restrain in dealing with the Korean Peninsula.

So iyon po, ang masasabi po natin ay it in the sense being in a very statesman-like manner; he use diplomacy and dialogue works. Only players in the region should push for peace, hindi po iyong giyera, it’s an opposite. So kumbaga, if you want—the call was basically a call for peace and stability in the region.

MERCADO:                                       At itong pakikipag-usap na ito, you know, comes after the President visited the visiting ships diyan sa Davao. At mayroon ng rapport, hindi ba? Sa tingin ninyo ba ay may rapport na sila with the—

USEC. ABELLA:                              Definitely mayroon pong rapport. Definitely there’s an appreciation of … ang ano po kasi, ang ano natin isang—one of the things that really works for the President is his transparency, iyong ano po siya—in a sense, you don’t have to read him ‘no. Hindi mo kailangang…you don’t have second guess him, he’s very out frank.

MERCADO:                                       So ano ba ang plano dahil sa … mayroon bang imbitasyon … the President, well, of course, with the Chinese ano, mayroon bang mga exchange of visits sa mga—

USEC. ABELLA:                                Mayroon po. Sometime this month, mayroon pong mga biyahe ang Presidente and, definitely, it will include China. Mayroon po siya.

MERCADO:                                       Sa ano naman—prior to this, the President has also received a call from President Trump.

USEC. ABELLA:                              Ano po siya, it was an open invitation. It was an open invitation na siyempre the President appreciates. Definitely, it’s a welcome invitation but he did not … hindi naman po siya nag-ano, hindi siya nag-commit to either go or not go.

MERCADO:                                       And would it be safe to say that katulad din ng kaniyang rapport at pakikipag-ugnayan kay President Xi Jinping ay mayroon ding na-establish na rapport with President Trump of the United States?

USEC. ABELLA:                              Opo. Both of them are really out of the box, alam natin na they’re both subject to a lot of criticisms, especially from the different elite na establishment ‘no. On the other hand, ang rapport po nila comes from, siguro sabihin natin na they both have a lot of street smarts ‘no. Iyong kumbaga mayroon silang damdamin, at saka experience ‘no. Hindi ko po masasabi na magkutad sila ng experience but definitely, there seems to be some rapport going on between them. In the words of the President of United States again, ‘naiintindihan ko iyong ginagawa ninyo diyan. So kumbaga, ina-acknowledge ng Presidente ng US na mahalaga iyong ginawa ng Presidente in order to preserve the next generation.

Mahalaga po na maintindihan natin the premise, the emphasis of the President natin ano – it is to preserve the Filipino nation, the next generation at saka maisauli iyong ating dignidad, tayong mga Pilipino. I think that’s one of the things that President is really emphasizing: the sense of patriotism; the sense na kahit na gaano tayo kaliit ay we can stand and we have dignity and honor as Filipinos and human beings.

MERCADO:                                      Very well said, Secretary Ernesto Abella. Maraming salamat sa iyong pagsagot sa aming tawag. Thank you very much.

USEC. ABELLA:                              Salamat din po.
